Team Serious On Tour: Supporting Wisden With Their Bat Testing At The Oval

In late January, the Serious team headed to the Kia Oval with a van full of cricket equipment to assist Wisden with their magazine ‘gear test.’

Wisden invited five expert testers to rate thirty cricket bats, which had been selected from ten different cricket brands, in the indoor centre at the Oval to determine Wisden’s Cricket Bat of the Year.

The cricket brands that were tested were Salix, Gray-Nicolls, Gunn and Moore, Kookaburra, DSC, Newbery, Chase, New Balance, World Class Willow, and SG.

Along with the plethora of cricket bats, we brought along a vast array of cricket equipment, including batting gloves, cricket helmets, batting pads, wheelie and duffle bags, cricket shoes and spikes and protective gear such as thigh pads and abdo guards.

The morning was spent in the Committee Room, situated in the Member’s Pavilion and overlooking the pitch, taking photos of the cricket kit before spending the afternoon in the Oval's indoor cricket centre.

A particular highlight for most of the people in attendance was watching one of the testers, Davina Perrin bat. At just 15, she became the youngest person to be selected in the Hundred in 2022 and is in the ACE Programme.

The other four testers were from around the wider Wisden team, ranging from the writers to the digital team and were of differing abilities and ages to provide a balanced review for all readers.

It was great for Serious to be involved in an event like this with one of cricket’s most iconic publications and to play such a big part in making the day happen.

For the results and the full rundown of the cricket equipment testing, you will need to buy issue 75 of the Wisden Cricket Monthly Magazine.
